West Custer County Library provides free access to both physical and digital resources, movies, technology, research and homework help, plus other educational and consumer resources. The Library of Things continues to grow, with a car engine code scanner, solar power packs, a trailcam, and other items added for checkout this year. We have zoo passes, state parks passes, and the very popular Royal Gorge Bridge and Park pass so you can visit any of those places for free. We support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library so every child in Custer County ages 0-5 can get a free monthly book.
We provide free programming for all ages, from the Summer and Winter Reading Programs for kids and adults respectively, to Dungeons & Dragons, hiking safety, Mama/Baby Cafe for new moms, and senior fraud prevention, to name just a few. We offer one-on-one tech help, and host the monthly DMV2Go and Virtual Legal Clinic. We have a new partnership with AARP to bring their digital literacy programs and senior wellness offerings to the library. The library website is always bursting with programs designed with our community in mind, and we continually explore new partnerships to expand our programs and services.
What’s the difference between giving directly to the library or to the Friends of the Library? The Friends fund the extras that the regular library budget can’t support, like extra book purchases (physical and digital), upgrading technology in the children’s area, and a new glass fronted bookcase for the Local History Center. Gifts directly to the library in 2026 will support further interior refresh upgrades (wired furniture, study pods, moveable tables and chairs), continuing newspaper digitization, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and our ongoing fundraising for a new roof.
