Celebrate Independence with The Mortar Men

For decades, the Wet Mountain Valley’s Fourth of July fireworks show lit up Lake DeWeese Reservoir, a beloved tradition with fireworks bursting above the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Over time, rising costs, drought, fire danger, and environmental impacts made the lake location unsustainable, and the show faded away.

The community’s desire to celebrate, however, never disappeared.

A New Spark of Tradition

In 2023, three local business owners reignited the tradition. Calling themselves The Mortar Men, they founded a nonprofit, invested in training, secured insurance, and worked with local businesses to bring fireworks back to the Valley.

That first year’s show near the Silver Cliff water towers was small but magical. By 2024, the event grew into a bigger, safer display south of the Silver Dome Saloon and Music Hall. Now, families enjoy downtown shops and restaurants after the parade, then gather to watch fireworks light up the sky once again.

Why Your Support Matters

Producing a professional fireworks show is costly. Fireworks prices continue to rise due to tariffs, and insurance premiums climb every year. As a nonprofit, The Mortar Men rely on the community’s generosity to cover expenses.

Your support helps:

  • Keep tradition alive for families and visitors.
  • Boost local businesses by keeping people downtown.
  • Strengthen community pride through a shared celebration.
